Securing our supply of water

5 billion litres needed a day by 2050
New reservoirs to keep the taps running

The Environment Agency and water companies have estimated that by 2050 we will need an additional 5 billion litres of water every day to meet demand.

Climate change and population growth are putting increasing pressure on our water supply. Companies are investing £104 billion to improve our infrastructure and secure our long-term water supply. This investment will include ten new reservoirs, the first of which, Havant Thicket in Hampshire, is already under construction – the first reservoir to be built since 1991

The investment will also see new schemes to transfer water from wetter regions to drier regions, along with new surface and groundwater water capture and storage systems.

Not only will these plans protect against future drought conditions, but investing in these new sources of water supply will reduce the need to take water from the environment to meet growing demand, relieving pressure on rivers.
