Investing to stop sewage spills

Water companies are investing £12 billion to almost halve spills from storm overflows by 2030 compared to 2021. This investment includes building thousands of massive storm tanks to hold rainwater and investing in nature-based solutions to stop rainwater getting into sewers in the first place. Anglian Water

Anglian Water is investing £1 billion to tackle sewage spills and has already removed 340 storm overflows from their network. The plan includes nature-based solutions such as sustainable drainage and increased storm tank capacity to reduce pressure on sewers and improve monitoring. Click the image to find out more.

Northumbrian Water

Northumbrian Water is investing £1.7 billion to improve the environment, which includes a £5.6 million investment at Felton sewage treatment works. The enhancements to the site ensures it can deal with increased amounts of combined sewage and rainwater entering sewers. Click the image to find out more.

Severn Trent

Severn Trent is investing £1.1 billion on storm overflow improvements. They have already delivered over 1,000 improvements to cut spills from storm overflows, with 24,000 spills being prevented so far. By 2030, they expect to be on track to reduce storm overflows by an average of 14 spills per year. Click the image to find out more.

Southern Water

Southern Water are investing £1.5 billion to ensure their storm overflows meet the government’s 2050 targets. By 2035, 75% of high priority overflows will be meeting government targets, going up to 100% by 2050. Click the image to find out more.

South West Water

South West Water is investing more than £700 million to reduce storm overflows, meeting the government’s target 10 years ahead of the deadline. South West Water has also promised to tackle every bathing beach and reduce storm overflows at bathing and shellfish waters by 2030.

Thames Water

Thames Water are investing £1.8 billion between 2025 and 2030 to improve river health across London. The largest improvement project to their network is the Thames Tideway Tunnel, or super sewer. This £4.6 billion project is a 25km tunnel which helps reduce combined sewer overflows by 95% in a typical year.

United Utilities

United Utilities is investing over £3 billion from 2025 to 2030 to upgrade storm overflow infrastructure. In the first year, more than 400 overflows were improved. Monitoring also shows a one-quarter reduction in spill duration, with 65% of spill reductions in 2025 directly linked to their interventions. Click the image to find out more.

Welsh Water

Welsh Water is investing £2.5 billion by 2030 on projects to improve the environment. This includes £889 million to reduce the impact of storm overflows. The investment is delivering projects such as the £13 million storm overflow at Pont-y-felin in Torfaen, which harnesses the natural filtering power of wetlands. Click the image to find out more.

Wessex Water is investing £515 million from 2025 to 2030 to improve 143 storm overflows and reduce their environmental impact. This includes 31 nature-based solutions, as well as installing storage tanks and increasing treatment capacity. Click the image to find out more.
