Investment in waste and wastewater management
Water companies will continue to spend billions each year on the services and infrastructure required while keeping customer bills’ as low as possible.
The UK water industry manages more than 16 billion litres of wastewater a day through 624,200km of sewers and 9,000 wastewater treatment plants.
This involves collecting, processing, and returning the water to the environment, with treatment applied according to the sustainability of local conditions.
Investment in sewerage services since 1990 has reached more than 39 billion by 2015 (Defra), excluding spending on infrastructure maintenance.
The industry's investment in waste management will ensure that more than 99% of wastewater is recycled to the environment, and treated to the required quality levels to protect or improve our rivers and coastal waters.
